my problem with the “Zoro is illiterate” take is that it takes away from his absolute “no fuck given-dumbass” energy, bc. he acually had the most formal education amongst the Strawhats, growing up in a dojo and probably going to temple scholl till he left it. that’s the whole beauty of it. the dude’s not illiterate at all, he just can’t be bothered to do ANYTHING. it’s an actual EFFORT he makes, it doesn’t just stems from his lack of educatin. he works for it! don’t y’all take this away.
Most people who assume Zoro is illiterate missed the actual sbs where Oda confirmed he can read… And the black and white drawing where he’s reading while lifting a wholeass crocodile by accident thinking it’s a weight.
Moreover, those who think Zoro is stupid have little to no understanding of Japanese culture, which is steeped in zen buddhism. This is especially important when interpreting male heroes, as historically the warrior class of Japan is also the most educated and spiritually rounded. So like the original poster says, dojos are not only physical but intellectual hubs of practice.
In Japan the more physically trained a person becomes in potentially dangerous fighting sports, the more they are expected to be of thoughtful and sound character.
Japanese swordsmanship and war is highly bound with ideas of morality, duty, wisdom and careful moral judgement. As Zoro’s upbringing is distinctly Japanese and kendo is so tied to samurai there is no fuckin’ way he is genuinely unintelligent or a mere aggressive hooligan.
This is very implicit knowledge that most Japanese One Piece readers already posess, so I get why a lot of foreign readers miss that part of him.
